Wacky Walk

The main graduation ceremony was held in the stadium on June 15, 2003. The “Wacky Walk” is a Stanford graduation tradition. Graduates enter the stadium in costume, on the dubious theory that their families can more easily find them in the crowd.

I’m in there somewhere.

Department ceremony

Grandma and Grandpa sat in the front row of the Urban Studies Departmental graduation ceremony. Aunty Mary is giving Grandpa a Stanford cap to wear, while Aunty Carol and “Aunty” Sue look on.

The Urban Studies ceremony, held immediately after the main ceremony in the stadium, was very enjoyable, and took place under the cool shade of a nice big tree.

The ceremony was intimate enough that each student had their accomplishments acknowledged and families were given ample opportunity to take as many pictures as they wanted when the diplomas were presented by Associate Director Katherine Cushing and Director Len Ortolano. Naomi graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was the recipient of the Robert M. Golden Award in the Humanities for excellence in writing.

Leis

My Aunties, Uncle Mike, Grandma and Grandpa brought up many beautiful leis all the way from Hawaii, possibly even more than I had for my high school graduation. These are only the foundation layers.

Uncle Mike

Uncle Mike wishes me congratulations.

… until they reach the top of my head.

Leis

Help! I need a snorkle.

Wearing so many leis makes it hard to walk around; even harder to eat a snack.

Cartoon by Roy Chang

Cartoon from the book You Know You’re in Hawai‘i When …, by Don Chapman, illustrated by Roy Chang (Mutual Publishing 2003). This shows that this sight is typical at graduations in Hawaii … or of people living on the mainland with local roots. Compare the pictures above with my high school graduation.

To see a list from the book describing how you would recognize people from Hawai‘i, click here, then the link under the four pictures at the top of the page.
